<p>A U.S. Senate Resolution sponsored by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) and other lawmakers designates May as National Youth Traffic Safety Month. The campaign to raise safe driving awareness comes at the start of the deadliest period of the year for teen drivers.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics, 422 teens die in car crashes during each of the summer months. That’s compared to 363 teen driving deaths that occur during each of the non-summer months.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Perhaps due to immaturity and inexperience, Wyly said, young drivers may be more likely to engage in risky behavior such as speeding, drag racing, failing to wear a seat belt or driving while texting, using a cell phone or consuming alcohol. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>In some cases, teen drivers may simply have too many other teens in the car with them, the Houston personal injury attorney said. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Wyly pointed to a recent AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study that found that the fatality risk for drivers ages 16-17 increases by 44 percent when they carry one passenger younger than age 21. The risk doubles with two passengers under age 21, and it quadruples with three or more passengers 21 or younger, the study revealed.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“When a car is full of teenagers, the driver is likely to be distracted at some point, and that obviously creates a higher risk of accidents, injuries or deaths,” Wyly said. “It’s certainly one of the points to emphasize when discussing safe driving with your teen.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>When a person is injured in a car accident because of a driver’s negligent or reckless behavior, Texas law allows the victim to be compensated for their losses, including vehicle damage, medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering, Wyly said.</p>

<p> The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship has awarded two new awards for Courageous Women Entrepreneurs at the 2012 Rice University Business Plan Competition. Solanux, Inc., University of Idaho, was awarded the $  20,000 prize for their patented potato food ingredients which contain high amounts of resistant starch (RS) which help lower the glycemic index response, improve insulin levels and lower fat and cholesterol levels. SaSaAfrica, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was awarded the $  5,000 Courageous Women Entrepreneur’s Award. SaSaAfrica connects craftswomen from developing countries to the global marketplace using a simple mobile phone. </p>

<p>To be eligible for the Women’s Entrepreneur cash prize, graduate-level business plan teams must have, in addition to standard qualifications: a woman as CEO or in a top leadership role or a minimum 25% woman-ownership, and all teams must have at least one female on the presenting team.</p>
